Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping,
and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour?” (Matthew 26:40) Jesus
will also say, “The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak”
(26.41). The inner man told them that
they must be loyal to Jesus. They must
even be ready to die for Him. But they
don’t even have the physical stamina to watch with Jesus for even an hour. Jesus was gaining the victory of spirit over
flesh while the disciples demonstrate what happens when the flesh conquers
spirit. We are a weak and needy
people. Willingness is not enough. We must call out to God in prayer for
victory.
